How to Assign Weights to Template Question Options

Assigning weights to questions is crucial for accurately measuring the overall impact or importance of a survey, assessment, or decision-making process.

By strategically weighting questions, we can prioritize key factors, differentiate levels of significance, and ensure that the final results reflect the true priorities and objectives of the evaluation.

Ultimately, this process allows for a more nuanced understanding of the data and prevents less important questions from skewing the overall outcome. It also helps with making sure that the resulting data visualizations are truly representative of what is being observed.

Steps to Adjust Weights of Question Options

1. At this point, you should be signed into your Education Walkthrough Account, and on the Templates page.

2. Find the template that you’re looking for within the Template table. You can also use the search and filters functions. Once you’ve located it, click ‘Edit’.

If you’re creating a template from scratch, you’ll need to follow the steps to create a new template (learn more about that here).

Once you’re in the template builder, you can add various question types. You have the ability to toggle the ‘Weight’ option on or off.

When you toggle the weight option on, you’ll notice that you can see the auto-assigned weights for that question (typically, there are four standard options — so the weights are numbered 4, 3, 2, 1 in descending order; but you can adjust these if needed).

To ensure consistent and meaningful scoring, we use a standardized weighting system for the questions. Responses are generally assigned weights of 4, 3, 2, or 1, representing varying degrees of importance or impact. A weight of 4 indicates the highest level of significance, while 1 represents the lowest. A weight of 0 will be used exclusively for instances where a particular item or behavior was not observed or applicable, ensuring these instances don’t influence the overall score. This standardized approach allows for objective comparison and analysis across all responses.

If you want to add more options to provide additional weights, you can do so by clicking on ‘Add Option’ and then type out the name of that option.

Note: You may need to save first, or toggle the ‘Weight’ button off and on again in order to see the weight line appear where you can add in the additional weight.
