Technical Specifications & IT Deployment Guide for Education Walkthrough

This article outlines the minimum technical requirements, supported devices, and best‑practice deployment steps for the Education Walkthrough (EW) mobile apps and web platform. Feel free to share this document directly with your IT department or include it in district onboarding materials.

1. Platform Overview

ExperiencePrimary UseAccess Point
Web AppTemplate creation, analytics, report exportshttps://dashboard.educationwalkthrough.com

(Chrome, Edge, Safari, Firefox)
Mobile AppOn‑the‑go walkthrough data collection, offline captureiOS App Store / Google Play

Both experiences connect to the same secure cloud database; users can start a walkthrough on one device and finish or review it on another once data syncs.

2. Online & Offline Access

  • Real‑time sync – Completed walkthroughs, comments, and media sync instantly when an internet connection is available.
  • Offline Mode (mobile) – If Wi‑Fi or cellular drops, EW automatically switches to Offline Mode so you can continue collecting evidence. Tap Sync when you’re back online and data will upload with its original timestamps. (Enabled for all paid plans.)

3. Supported Devices & OS Versions

iPhone & iPad

  • Requires iOS 12.4 or later (native support for iPhone & iPadOS)
  • App size ≈ 25 MB download, < 150 MB installed
  • Compatible with Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 11+

Android Phones & Tablets

  • Requires Android 7.0 (“Nougat”) or later
  • APK size ≈ 55 MB download, < 200 MB installed
  • Google Play services optional but recommended for push notifications

Chromebooks & Desktops

  • Chromebooks that support Android apps can install the mobile APK from Google Play.
  • For web, use a modern standards‑based browser (see § 4 below).

Memory: We recommend at least 2 GB of free RAM for smooth photo/video capture.

4. Browser Compatibility (Web App)

BrowserMinimum Version
Google Chrome 109
Microsoft Edge 109
Mozilla Firefox 109
Apple Safari (macOS & iPadOS) 16

5. Network & Security

  • Domains to allowlist: *.educationwalkthrough.com
  • Ports: 443 (HTTPS); 80 (redirect only)
  • Encryption: TLS 1.2+ in transit, AES‑256 at rest
  • Authentication: Google Workspace OAuth, or email/password
  • Compliance: FERPA‑aligned data practices, COPPA‑friendly (no student PII stored), WCAG 2.1 AA UI contrast and keyboard navigation

6. Storage & Bandwidth Considerations

  • Average file sizes
    • Text‑only walkthrough ≈ 50 KB
    • With 5 HQ photos ≈ 5–7 MB
  • Recommended bandwidth: 1 Mbps up / down for seamless sync; offline mode mitigates spotty campus Wi‑Fi.

7. Mobile Device Management (MDM) & Mass Deployment

  • Apple School Manager & Google Admin Console—EW is listed as a free app, enabling silent push or managed configuration.
  • App auto‑updates via the respective store; version pinning is supported through MDM if your district requires vetting before update rollout.

8. Accessibility & Camera Permissions

  • The app requests access to the device camera/mic only when the user attaches media. Denying access disables in‑app recording but all other functionality remains.
  • All interactive controls meet WCAG targets (≥ 44×44 px touch area).
