Two ways in: an email and password, or your Google account. Most schools use one or the other for everyone, and the choice matters for IT, because it decides where passwords live and who can reset them. This article is the reference for technology directors; for a sign-in that is failing today, start with Troubleshooting Login and Google Sign-In.
Email and password
- Passwords are at least 8 characters and are never stored or emailed in plain text.
- Reset is self-serve from the sign-in page. The reset link expires after one hour.
- Sessions on the web last 30 days, or 60 with Remember Me. Signing out ends the session on that device.
- No built-in multi-factor authentication today. Districts that need MFA use Google sign-in and enforce it there.
Sign in with Google
- Standard Google OAuth. Users click Sign in with Google and approve once. We receive the name, email address, and profile photo from the Google account, and use them to create or match the Education Walkthrough account.
- No separate password. A Google-created account has no Education Walkthrough password; your Google Workspace policies (MFA, password rules, offboarding) apply, see Troubleshooting Google Sign-In.
- One method per account. An account signs in the way it was created. To switch methods, or when a user’s email changes, see How to Change Your Account Email Address.
- Drive access. Google sign-in also asks for permission to save walkthrough reports to the user’s Google Drive, so Google users do not need a separate Drive connection.
ClassLink
ClassLink today is for rostering: it syncs teachers and schools into Education Walkthrough, see ClassLink Sync. Signing in through the ClassLink launchpad is on our roadmap and not available yet. Users at ClassLink districts sign in with Google or with email and password.
Not supported
Microsoft, Clever, and Apple sign-in are not available. If your district requires one of them, tell us through a support ticket; requests are counted in our roadmap.
Frequently asked questions
Q: Which Google scopes are requested?
A: Basic profile (name, email, photo) and Drive file access for report saving. We do not read Gmail, Calendar, or Classroom.
Q: Can we restrict sign-in to our domain?
A: Not inside Education Walkthrough. Your admins control who is invited to the school or district, and Google Workspace admins can restrict which third-party apps users may authorize.
Q: What happens when a user leaves the district?
A: For Google accounts, disabling the Google account ends their ability to sign in. For email and password accounts, your School Admin or District Admin archives the user in the dashboard, which frees the license.
Q: Where are the technical requirements?
A: Domains, ports, and device details are in the Technical Specifications and IT Deployment Guide. For encryption and hosting, see Data Security Overview.
