COPPA and Student Data

COPPA is the federal rule for online services that collect personal information from children under 13. Vendor questionnaires ask about it by default, so here is where Education Walkthrough stands.

Students never use Education Walkthrough

  • Adults only. Accounts belong to school and district staff: principals, assistant principals, coaches, and administrators. Teachers are observed, not signed in. There is no student login, student view, or student-facing feature.
  • No student information is collected. There is no field for a student’s name, ID, grade, or work, see What Data Does Education Walkthrough Collect?.
  • Nothing is directed at children. The website, the dashboard, and the mobile app are built for and marketed to educators.

Because no personal information is collected from children, COPPA’s parental-consent and notice requirements do not apply to the use of Education Walkthrough. Our public summary for IT teams says the same: COPPA-friendly, no student PII stored.

Classroom photos and video

Observers can attach photos or short videos to a walkthrough. These are taken by an adult, on a school-managed account, to document instruction. They are not collected from a child. We still recommend keeping students out of frame and following your district’s media policy, and your admins can delete any attachment.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Can a student ever get an account?
A: Not through any supported path. Accounts are created by school admins, by invitation, or by a signup that asks for a school role. If a student account were ever created by mistake, your admin can delete it, or submit a support ticket and we will.

Q: Do you need a COPPA consent form from our district?
A: No. No consent is needed because no children’s data is collected. If your procurement form requires a vendor statement, submit a support ticket and we will provide one.

Q: How does this relate to FERPA?
A: Both come down to the same fact: Education Walkthrough holds no student data. See FERPA and Education Walkthrough.
